The injury to Aaron Rodgers is likely to cost the Green Bay Packers in next year’s NFL Draft thanks to a term from the trade agreement.

Rodgers was traded from the Packers to the New York Jets in April just days before the start of the 2023 NFL Draft. The deal ended months of speculation of where the veteran quarterback would be playing his football after 18 years at Lambeau Field.

In the season’s first Monday Night Football game against the Buffalo Bills, the 39-year-old made his Jets debut. However, Rodgers’ evening came to an abrupt end after he sustained an injury.

On what was only his fourth play as the Jets’ new starting quarterback, Rodgers went down with what has been described as a suspected Achilles’ injury. No official word has been said on the severity of the injury to Rodgers, but a scan on Tuesday will determine the extent.

The Jets managed to win the game 22-16 despite Rodgers not being on the field for the majority of the contest against their AFC East divisional rivals. Not only may the injury have ramifications for the Jets, but also for Rodgers’ former team, the Packers.

As part of the trade agreement struck between the teams, the Packers received some draft picks in exchange for Rodgers. Some of these picks are conditional depending on how Rodgers performs in his first year at the MetLife Stadium.

One of the clinching factors in the trade is believed to be the Jets handing a conditional second-round selection in the 2024 NFL Draft. This pick would turn into a first-rounder provided Rodgers took part in at least 65 percent of the Jets’ offensive snaps this season.

As a result of Rodgers’ injury, although an official announcement is yet to be made on the severity, it’s possible that the quarterback will not be on the field for the required amount of time to turn the pick into a first-rounder for the Packers.
