In the wake of their Super Bowl loss, the San Francisco 49ers are in the process of finding a replacement for Steve Wilks.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan of the San Francisco 49ers says an appointment should be confirmed this week. The team is getting close to selecting a new defensive coordinator.

After the Niners’ Super Bowl LVIII loss to the Kansas City Chiefs earlier this month, they fired Steve Wilks, and the position is still open for coordinators in the NFL.

Shanahan provided NBC Sports Bay Area with an update on the search for Wilks’ replacement, stating that interviews with 49ers defensive pass game specialist Nick Sorensen and former LA Chargers head coach Brandon Staley are now complete. He told NBC that the team “should finish it all up this week.”

Daniel Bullocks, the coach of the Niners defensive backs, is also anticipated to be interviewed for the position; Shanahan reportedly mentioned that two other outside candidates will be contacted. Teams are required by NFL regulations to interview two or more minority candidates for coordinator jobs.

After taking over for DeMeco Ryan as defensive coordinator in San Francisco during the previous summer, Wilks was only in the position for one season before being named head coach of the Houston Texans.

In his third season as the Chargers’ head coach, LA dismissed Staley last season. He was Sean McVay’s defensive coordinator for one season at the LA Rams before joining the Chargers.
