49ers Linebacker Prepares for Week 5 Comeback Against Cardinals After 8-Month Rehab

49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw is set to make his much-anticipated return to the field in Week 5 against the Cardinals on October 6, following an eight-month recovery from a ruptured Achilles.

Traditionally, this injury sidelines players for 9–12 months, but advances in medical procedures and rehab have shortened recovery times.

Dr. Kenneth Jung, a consultant for the Rams, noted that a six-month comeback is now achievable, as seen with Cam Akers in 2021. Greenlaw’s return timeline reflects modern rehabilitation success, though his on-field performance will depend on his regained strength and conditioning.

When Greenlaw makes a comeback in Week 5, on October 6, when the 49ers play the Cardinals, he will have been out of the injury for about eight months. That would not put him on a particularly expeditious healing path.

49ers injury update on LB Dre Greenlaw

A ruptured Achilles used to frequently keep players out of action for nine to twelve months, according to Dr. Kenneth Jung, a foot and ankle surgeon and consultant for the Los Angeles Rams, who told the Chronicle in February.

But improvements in rehabilitation and surgery methods have slowed the process. In 2021, Jung played a supporting role in the Rams and Cam Akers’ rehabilitation.

Akers returned to action in the regular-season finale, having suffered a torn Achilles tendon less than six months earlier.

With confidence, we can advise patients that six months is a suitable duration for their return, as Jung stated. Naturally, nothing is absolute. A lot hinges on Greenlaw’s recovery and his ability to regain his strength.

First of all, Purdy said, “I believe that sounds cheesy, but I was where I was at.” “I’m just wherever my feet are right now. My arm got ripped; yup, surgery.

I thus attended treatment on a daily basis, and that was that. How can I recover as best I can, day in and day out, for as many hours each day?

And not evaluating myself against other people after that. There’s a lot of talk these days. Will you return for the start of the season, dude?

A few of our quarterbacks are returning players. Oh my god, it’s so easy to get sucked into the world of uncertainty.

Will I be able to survive? I therefore didn’t want to evaluate myself against other people. I had complete faith that everything would work out for the best when I was in this situation.

Since I’m a devoted man, I think things will work out, but I didn’t try to make snap judgments or predict the future or anything of the sort. If I had done it, I most likely would have experienced a severe case of anxiety, wondering if I would survive. I’m going crazy over things that are beyond my control.

Therefore, I continued to work on the playbook and review the games that I had played. How can I recover, return to the facility, interact with the guys, and strengthen those bonds even further? I believe that all those little things added up.
